Prior to joining the Taylor University administration, President Haines served on Taylor’s Board of Trustees. He is a 1975 Taylor graduate and the first 10 years of his professional career were spent in Upland. During those years, he served as Vice President for Student Development (1985-87), Dean of Students (1983-85), Director of Student Programs (1980-83), and Residence Hall Director (1977-80).
For the past 25 years, President Haines practiced with one of the nation’s largest law firms, Indianapolis-based Faegre Baker Daniels, the last 17 of which he served as partner. There, he specialized in working with non-profit organizations and served as legal counsel to dozens of colleges and universities across the country. He also provided legal services to organizations exempt from federal and state income taxes including churches and faith-based organizations, private foundations, museums, fraternities, veterans’ organizations, amateur athletic organizations, public charities of all types and other nonprofit organizations.
President Haines holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (Doctor of Education, 2017), Maurer School of Law at Indiana University (Doctor of Jurisprudence, 1990, cum laude); Ball State University (Master of Arts, 1977), and Taylor University (Bachelor of Arts, 1975).
In addition to his Taylor Board membership, President Haines holds and has held a number of other Board memberships including the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), Heartland Truly Moving Pictures, Inc., and Indianapolis Public Schools Education Foundation.
Honors accorded to President Haines during his professional career include his naming to the list Best Lawyers in America/Indianapolis Education Lawyer of the Year, Editorship of the Indiana Law Journal, and the Stephen S. Bedi Award for Excellence in Service to Higher Education from Taylor University.
His wife Sherry is a 1976 Taylor graduate, and spent 35 years as an art teacher in public and private schools, the last 18 of which were at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. Their daughter Hannah is a 2011 alumna of Taylor University.
