If you were building a house, you would need to have a blueprint which provides a plan of what it will look like and where you need to use different tools. A film is no different. You need to have some idea of the direction of where the story is heading even if you don’t have a script. Breaking down hours of footage of different characters, in different locations and at different times into a workable rough cut is one of the toughest exercises in post-production.
For filmmakers in pre-production or production, this session will help you better organize and control your shoots with specific goals to avoid ending up with tons of material that won’t help you tell the story. For filmmakers who are beginning post-production, this session will focus on how to get a handle on your material by defining the thematic progression with tools that are available to every filmmaker. The goal is to help to find your structure and drive your story forward.
This workshop is part of a series of three documentary structure-focused workshops which include Documentary Structure and Storytelling: The Essentials of Documentary Storytelling (9/15) and Documentary Structure and Storytelling: Structure Case Studies (9/29). If you are working on your first documentary, it is recommended you sign up for all three sessions since they build on each other. However, it is also possible to sign up for these sessions a la carte.

NOTE ON PAYMENT
Full payment must be received to guarantee you a spot in the class. In order to get the discounted earlybird rate, full payment must be RECEIVED by the earlybird date. Otherwise the regular rate will be charged.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Adele Schmidt is no stranger to the Docs In Progress community. As the co-founder of the organization in 2004 and staff member from 2009-2010, Adele was instrumental in helping the organization expand beyond its signature work-in-progress screenings to provide a full array of educational, professional development, and mentoring programs for emerging documentary filmmakers. In addition to more than 15 years working as a producer, director, editor, and consulting producer for award-winning long-form documentaries and short feature films, Adele has extensive teaching experience. She is an adjunct professorial lecturer in film and video production for graduate and undergraduate students at American University and also teaches field production at Fairfax Public Access TV, and has also taught film and video production and scriptwriting courses in Mexico City. She has also served as a panelist for the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, reviewing applications in the disciplines of writing, philosophy, history, and media arts.

The Documentary House is the home of Docs In Progress and is located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland at 8700 First Avenue (corner of First and Fenwick). We are only a few blocks from the Silver Spring Metro. Some free parking is available in the gravel lot behind our house (no permit is required after 5 pm on weekdays or all day on weekends). Additional parking is available in the Cameron Street Garage across the street (free after 7 pm on weekdays and all day on weekends). Click here for directions. If your circumstances change and you must withdraw from a class after registering, please be aware of our refund policy:
Withdrawal 30 or more calendar days before the first day of a program: 75% refund
Withdrawal 11-29 calendar days before the first day of a program: 50% refund
Withdrawal 10 or fewer calendar days before a program: No refund
In the event of seriously inclement weather, we will make a decision by 3 pm on whether to cancel that evening’s programs. (For Saturday classes, we will make the decision by 6 pm on Friday). If you have not received a notification from your instructor or the Educational Programs Manager, call our office at 301-789-2797 (we will have an outgoing message on voicemail).
