Since Docs In Progress has been in the Doc House, we have hosted an annual Winter Holiday Party to celebrate the end of an amazing programming year, bring together our incredible community, preview what's to come in the new year, and raise some funds to support all that we do. This year is no exception, but will be extra poignant because this will be our final event in the Documentary House.
As you may have already heard, Docs In Progress will be moving in January. As downtown Silver Spring has blossomed in tandem with the growth of our nonprofit organization, we knew that there would only be so much time before commercially-zoned houses like ours would have to make way for new development. While we have loved hosting classes, talks, parties, fellowship meetings, and a home-away-from-home for several thousand filmmakers who have joined us in what has come to be known affectionately as "The Doc House," it is time to open a new chapter.
Be assured: all the things Docs In Progress is known for in terms of our programs, services, and community are not going away. We are already planning a full slate of programming for 2017, and will be previewing that and our new space at this party. But we also know the Documentary House holds a special place in the heart of many of you, and we wanted to give our community a chance to say a proper goodbye to 8700 1st Avenue before we open a new chapter in our new space.
This is a chance for members of the documentary filmmaking community and our broader community of friends, colleagues, and the curious to mix, mingle, make merry, make memories in the space which has been our home for the past eight years, and look forward to an exciting future for Docs In Progress.
In addition to being a great opportunity to network, this event is also central to our end-of-year giving campaign. Docs In Progress is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This year, your donation will help us as we make our transition.
To attend the Holiday Party, we ask that you commit to a minimum $25 donation. As a small nonprofit, Docs In Progress never owned our building. We were lucky enough to have a landlord who kept our rent below market rates. When our building was sold in late September, the only way we could stay in the house through the end of 2016 was to agree to pay a significantly higher rent. The decision to stay in the house through the end of the year with the increased rent is not one our Board made lightly, but ultimately we decided it was important to keep our 2016 program schedule as planned so that we could focus on the move in mid-December and early January when it would impact no programs for our community.
While we had been planning our typical modest end-of-year campaign, we are now looking at an additional unanticipated $15,000 in expenses. How does that break down?
If we reach our goal, we can breathe easy that the move will not negatively impact our budget. If we surpass our goal, any additional funds will be put towards capacity-building to ensure that Docs In Progress can continue to grow to support the needs of our community.
