PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Want to learn how to get amazing interviews, whether you are making a documentary, an oral history project, or capturing your own community or family stories? There are as many ways to shoot interviews as there are styles or subjects of documentaries. It’s important to make a decision early in terms of what stylistic approach you have for your project and what style of interview works best.

This three-hour workshop will give you insights into different approaches to interviews, what to consider when setting up and filming an interview, and a chance to get some hands-on experience setting up and conducting a one-on-one interview. Make the most of your time with each subject and learn how to get the best possible interviews for your documentary.

TEACHING ARTIST
​Sam Hampton co-founded Docs In Progress as a nonprofit organizationin 2008 and served on its founding staff from 2009-2012. He was instrumental in developing the organization’s core curriculum of adult and youth educational programs and remains a key advisor and teaching artist for Docs In Progress classes.  Sam balances his time between consulting with nonprofits through Hampton Consulting, and producing award-winning documentaries for the educational market.  His films include My Mother’s JourneyHidden BooksMr. Stokes’ Mission, and Transcending Surgeon. In addition to his filmmaking background, Sam has more than 25 years of experience working on social justice issues, including directing a national model community technology center and managing strategic planning and grants management for minority-serving colleges and universities.

Docs In Progress is located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland at 801 Wayne Avenue.

We are in an office building located at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Cedar Lane (behind the St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church which is behind the Whole Foods parking lot). We are an easy walk from Veteran's Plaza (the ice rink), the Silver Spring Library, the Silver Spring Metro station, and parking options.

From the Silver Spring Metro, you can walk up Colesville and then up Wayne Avenue for the shortest and most direct route or stop on Ellsworth or other nearby streets if you are planning to eat first.

If you prefer an alternative to the 12 minute walk from the Metro, check out the free RideOn VanGo 28 Circulator Shuttle. Ask the driver to let you off at the stop closest to Wayne and Fenton. From there, we are only a block up Wayne.

If you are driving, there is limited visitor parking in the lot behind our building (enter from Cedar). Please do NOT park in any spots which say Employee Parking. If the lot is full, the nearest parking garages are the Wayne Avenue Garage or the Town Square Garage (enter from Ellsworth or Roeder). They are each noted on the map below with a P. On weekdays, parking is $1 per hour until 9 pm if you enter the garage before 7 pm. If you enter the garage after 7 pm, it is free. Parking is free on weekends. Both garages are open 24/7. Please DO NOT park in the Whole Foods Parking Lot since they have stringent towing enforcement.

Once in the office building, take the elevator down to the G level and you will find us in Suite G-100. If you need to enter the building with a ramp, you can do so from the back of the building where the parking area is (there are limited visitor spots there too).

If you arrive at our building after 7:30 pm or are coming for a Sunday program, you will also need to enter from the back of the building and get buzzed in using the door buzzer since the building is technically closed at that time. Once buzzed in or, upon exiting, please do not hold the door open for longer than 30 seconds since it will set off the alarm.


 
REFUND POLICY
If your circumstances change and you must withdraw from a class after registering, please be aware of our refund policy:
Withdrawal 30 or more calendar days before the first day of a program: 75% refund
Withdrawal 11-29 calendar days before the first day of a program: 50% refund
Withdrawal 10 or fewer calendar days before a program: No refund

WEATHER POLICY
In the event of seriously inclement weather, we will make a decision by 3 pm on whether to cancel that evening’s programs. (For Saturday classes, we will make the decision by 6 pm on Friday). If you have not received a notification from your instructor or the Educational Programs Manager, call our office at 301-789-2797 (we will have an outgoing message on voicemail).
